Getting it right

Keeping perennials flowering

Deadhead through summer

Pull or snip off spent flowers every week or two. Salvias, gaillardia and alstroemeria will keep producing new ones.

Cut back in late winter

Once frosts ease in August, cut salvias back by about a third. Trim lavender lightly after each flush, without cutting into bare wood.

Go easy on fertiliser

Too much fertiliser gives soft, leafy growth and fewer flowers. A light feed in spring is plenty for most of these.

Drainage first

Lavender, silver bush and lamb's ears rot in wet clay. Plant them on a mound or in a raised bed if your soil holds water.
