Our Plants & Stock

5 questions

We stock a wide range suited to Swan Hill and the Mallee region, including:

Australian natives · Roses · Succulents · Seedlings (seasonal veggie and flower) · Mop tops · Advanced trees · Shrubs · Fruit trees · Ornamental grasses

Prices start from around $5 for succulents, through to $55–$80 for advanced specimens and mop tops.

Stock changes with the seasons — call us on 0429 437 024 or pop in to see what's available today.

Plant availability changes continuously with the seasons and as new deliveries arrive. We source from local Mallee growers and some of the best nurseries in Victoria, so there's always something fresh to discover.

The best way to check is to call us on 0429 437 024 or simply come in and have a browse. We don't operate a real-time online catalogue — plants are living things and the range shifts week to week.

We source from local Mallee growers and the best nurseries in Victoria. That means our plants are properly acclimatised to the conditions here — not trucked in from interstate and dumped on a shelf.

Peta-Lyn and John are selective about who they buy from, because they know the difference it makes to how a plant performs once it's in your garden.

Just ask. If we haven't got it, we'll do our utmost to track it down. Give us a call on 0429 437 024 or drop in and have a chat — we'd rather help you find what you need than leave you searching.

At this stage, we're an in-store nursery — no online ordering or delivery at the moment. We encourage customers to come in so we can give you proper advice about what will work in your garden.

If you'd like to check availability or have a specific question before visiting, ring us on 0429 437 024.

Growing in the Mallee

5 questions

Absolutely — this is one of our areas of real expertise. Saline soil is a genuine challenge across much of the Swan Hill region, and it's something Peta-Lyn and John have managed on their own 3-acre property for over four decades.

Salt-tolerant options that perform well in the region include many Australian natives (saltbush, wattles), olives, figs, pomegranates, and a range of drought-tolerant shrubs and groundcovers. The right choice depends on your specific soil, aspect, and what you're trying to achieve.

Come in and talk to us. When Peta-Lyn or John recommends a salt-tolerant plant, they're drawing on firsthand experience from their own backyard — not just a product sheet.

Swan Hill is outstanding fruit-growing country. The Mallee climate — hot summers, cold winters, low humidity — suits a wide range of fruit trees, including:

Citrus (Lisbon lemons are particularly reliable) · Stone fruit — apricots, peaches, and plums perform beautifully · Table grapes (the Swan Hill region is one of Australia's top grape-growing areas) · Almonds · Pistachios · Figs · Pomegranates · Olives

Variety matters. Some rootstocks and varieties handle the Mallee far better than others. Speak to John or Peta-Lyn about what's right for your soil type and available water.

Many Australian natives are perfectly adapted to the Mallee — but not all natives are created equal. Coastal or high-rainfall natives often struggle here, while true Mallee species thrive.

Good performers for the Swan Hill region include wattles (Acacia), saltbushes (Atriplex and Rhagodia), native grasses, drought-hardy grevilleas, and local Mallee eucalypts. Our native stock is chosen for local relevance — not just generic "Australian native" plants that may have been propagated for a completely different climate.

Ask about wildlife-friendly natives. Many Mallee natives attract birds and native bees and make wonderful low-maintenance garden plants.

Swan Hill summers are hot, dry, and unforgiving. A few principles that make a real difference:

Choose the right plant first. A drought-tolerant species that's suited to the Mallee will always outperform a poorly-matched plant that needs constant watering to survive.

Water deeply, not often. Shallow, frequent watering keeps roots near the surface. Deep, infrequent watering encourages roots to go down — where moisture stays longer.

Mulch generously. A thick layer of mulch around your plants dramatically reduces soil moisture loss and keeps root zones cooler.

Establish before the heat hits. Plant in autumn or early spring where possible, so roots have time to develop before the first hot spell.

Not sure if a plant will cope? Ask us before you buy. We'd rather talk you out of a plant that won't survive than sell you something that won't last the season.

Frost is a real consideration in the Mallee — Swan Hill gets regular frosts from late autumn through to early spring. The good news is that many of the region's best garden plants are frost hardy by nature.

The established staples — most fruit trees (which actually need a chill period), natives, olives, rosemary, lavender, many ornamental grasses, and of course mop tops — handle Swan Hill winters without any trouble.

Tropicals, frost-sensitive citrus, and tender exotics need protection or a sheltered microclimate. When you buy from us, we'll tell you honestly what a plant needs — not just what you want to hear.

Rhimahden is owned and run by Peta-Lyn and John Nosatti. Peta-Lyn was born and raised in Swan Hill — on the very block that is now their family garden. John first moved to the area in the 1960s and has called the Mallee home ever since.

Together they have over 45 years of hands-on gardening experience in this region, including building a 3-acre garden on the outskirts of Swan Hill from scratch since 1981. The nursery has been part of the Swan Hill community for over 20 years.

Yes — tucked inside the nursery is a lovely little gift shop stocked with unique and affordable gifts for gardeners, nature lovers, and everyone in between. Garden ornaments, homewares, candles, cards, gardening tools and accessories, and seasonal gift items.
